Auspicious Snake
瑞祥蛇
Quiet change,
unfolding within.
The snake has occupied a mysterious place in Chinese imagination for a very long time. In ancient images, even the legendary ancestors Fuxi and Nüwa were sometimes shown with human heads and intertwined serpent bodies, surrounded by the sun, moon, and stars. The snake could therefore belong not only to the natural world, but also to an older world of myth and cosmic imagination.
For Auspicious Snake, I wanted a different kind of presence — quiet, elegant, and slightly mysterious. Rather than filling the form with detail, I kept reducing it until only the essential gesture remained.
The body became short and restrained, the neck gently lifted, the head turned slightly to one side. With such a simple silhouette, every curve began to matter.
I wanted the snake to feel less like an ornament and more like a small presence of its own — calm, watchful, and almost spirit-like.
At the center of the pattern is a snake carrying a sun wheel. I was drawn to the image for its sense of light, movement, and something quietly spiritual, without wanting to tie it to one specific story or tradition.
The printed motif and the flowing body line were designed together. The raised neck, sideways glance, and softly coiled tail give the small form its balance and rhythm.
That restraint became the character of Auspicious Snake (瑞祥蛇): a simple zodiac creature carrying a little light, a little mystery, and room for the imagination to continue the story.
Made by Hand
Original patterns are screen-printed onto fabric, then each piece is cut, sewn, filled, and finished by hand. Small variations are part of the process, making every zodiac companion slightly different.
