富貴豬
Contentment is its own
blessing.
In Chinese folk culture, the pig has long been associated with abundance, harvest, and a comfortable life. Its round, well-fed form naturally became part of the visual language of prosperity.
For this zodiac pig, I wanted that sense of abundance to feel playful rather than luxurious. The printed phrases 「珠光寶氣」 and 「肥豬拱門」 bring familiar New Year wishes onto the body with a little humor.
「肥豬拱門」 literally imagines a fat pig nudging its way through the gate — good fortune arriving almost by itself. That cheerful image became an important part of Prosperity Pig (富貴豬).
The form went through several revisions before it felt right: a slightly raised snout, a round, generous body, and a structure that felt stable without becoming stiff.
I originally planned a very safe, universally cute face. But after seeing an exhibition on Picasso and African art in Montreal, I became more interested in roughness, distortion, and directness. The pig gradually became less polite and a little more wild.
On its back, a printed coin slot turns the body into a playful savings vessel. Together, the folk phrases, rounded form, and slightly unruly expression give Prosperity Pig (富貴豬) its character — abundance with humor, not perfection.
Made by Hand
Original patterns are screen-printed onto fabric, then each piece is cut, sewn, filled, and finished by hand. Small variations are part of the process, making every zodiac companion slightly different.
