Overview
This lucky cat was first designed in 2009, inspired by a trip to Japan that marked my very first encounter with Japanese folk objects and visual culture.
Since then, it has become one of my most frequently made pieces—over the years, I’ve produced and shared around a thousand of them, often as gifts for friends. In a way, it quietly paid for that early journey and carried its memory forward.
Its gently smiling expression echoes the warmth of traditional Chinese wealth deities, which may be why it continues to feel familiar and well-loved.
Story
The lucky cat represents an early turning point in my work, when I began exploring how textile printing could move beyond flat surfaces into sculptural objects.
It reflects a transition from patchwork-based dolls toward hand screen-printed fabric forms, while still retaining small elements of collage and fabric layering.
Its cheerful face, slightly raised corners of the mouth, carries both folk charm and a sense of quiet optimism.
Making Process
This piece is created through a combination of screen printing and textile assembly:
- Two-color hand screen printing
- Fabric cutting and sewing
- Patchwork appliqué on ears
- Decorative fabric pocket on the chest
- Stuffing and shaping
- Final hand finishing
